Shocking Statistic Over 2200 Child Abuse Cases Reported in 2024

Introduction

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Women, Family, and Community has revealed that 2,240 child abuse cases were reported to the Social Welfare Department up until August 2024. This figure represents a notable decrease compared to the 4,469 cases documented in 2023.

Child Abuse Categorized by Type

The cases of abuse have been divided into three categories: physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. The data reveals a stark gender disparity, with girls suffering from sexual and emotional abuse at higher rates than boys, while boys experienced more physical abuse.

Sexual Abuse Cases: A Disturbing Gender Divide

The gender difference in sexual abuse cases is striking. In 2023, there were 2,328 sexual abuse incidents involving girls, compared to only 195 involving boys. By August 2024, the numbers had dropped slightly, with 1,149 girls affected and 111 boys suffering from similar crimes.

Sexual Crimes Against Children on the Rise

Police statistics further show an increasing trend in sexual crimes against children. In 2023, a total of 5,401 sexual crimes were reported, while 2,059 cases were recorded in just the first four months of 2024.

Legislation and Government Action

Minister Nancy Shukri reassured the public that the government remains committed to combating child abuse, citing the Child Act 2001, the Sexual Offenses Against Children Act 2017, and the Care Centers Act 1993. Amendments to the Child Act in 2016 have introduced harsher penalties for perpetrators.

Call for Collaboration Across Sectors

Nancy emphasized that preventing child abuse and sexual crimes is not solely the responsibility of the government. She called for cooperation from all sectors of society, including individuals, communities, and organizations, to tackle these issues more effectively.
