Google’s US$2 Billion Commitment to Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR – Google has commended Malaysia’s AI infrastructure development strategy under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, with the tech giant investing US$2 billion (RM8.93 billion) in the country.
At the APEC Summit in Peru, Karan Bhatia, Google’s Vice President of Government Affairs and Public Policy, highlighted that the Malaysian government’s approach to AI infrastructure was a key factor in Google’s decision to invest US$2 billion in a new data centre.
Google’s Investment in Data Centres and Cloud Regions
In May 2024, Google unveiled its US$2 billion investment, which includes setting up Malaysia’s first-ever data centre and the launch of a Google Cloud region to cater to the increasing demand for cloud services. The project will also involve AI education programs for students and teachers. This initiative is projected to generate US$3.2 billion (RM14.29 billion) in economic benefits and create 26,500 new jobs by 2030.
Microsoft’s Endorsement of Malaysia’s Comprehensive AI Roadmap
Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Zia Mansoor praised Malaysia’s National AI Roadmap, noting its comprehensive nature and focus on both AI infrastructure and the development of AI skills across the population. Mansoor made these comments at the APEC CEO Summit in Peru 2024.
“This is a very thorough plan, addressing both infrastructure and how to train Malaysians in AI technology,” Mansoor stated. The roadmap also includes establishing a government AI Centre of Excellence to leverage AI technology for public service applications.
