Renewal of Business Licenses Now Tied to Halal Certification
In Kelantan, businesses are now required to secure Malaysian Halal Certification before renewing their operating licenses. This policy has been introduced as part of the state’s commitment to upholding Islamic values in business operations.
Kota Bharu Takes the Lead in Policy Enforcement
The Kota Bharu Municipal Council-Islamic City has been chosen as the pioneer for this implementation. Speaking at a ceremony in Pasir Hor on Dec 26, State Islamic Development chairman Mohd Asri Mat Daud confirmed that other local authorities in Kelantan would follow suit in the near future.
“Insya-Allah, this will be a state-wide standard soon,” he stated during the event officiating Nasken International Sdn. Bhd.
Significant Number of Certifications Awarded
As reported by Utusan Malaysia, 453 halal certifications have been distributed across Kelantan in 2024 alone. These cover a wide range of businesses, including restaurants, hotels, pharmacies, and salons.
Mohd Asri noted that out of the total certifications, 405 were granted to Malay entrepreneurs, while 48 were awarded to non-Islamic establishments.
Meeting Stringent Requirements for Certification
Business operators must fulfill eight conditions to receive the halal certification. “This extends beyond just food and beverages—it also covers kitchen practices and materials used,” explained Mohd Asri.
Ongoing Inspections to Uphold Standards
Collaboration with agencies such as Jakim, the Health Ministry, and the Domestic Trade Ministry ensures compliance through both scheduled and surprise inspections. Kota Bharu stands out with the highest number of certified businesses, tallying nearly 190, while other districts report six to seven certified premises.
