Friday Break Extension Announced

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Employees in Johor will enjoy a two-hour break on Fridays starting in 2025, Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has confirmed.

Upcoming Weekend Shift Explained

This announcement comes as the state prepares to change its official weekend from Friday-Saturday to Saturday-Sunday, effective January 1. The adjustment aims to provide Muslim workers sufficient time for Friday prayers.

Private and Public Sector Adjustments

“Both public and private sectors must adopt this change, with private companies extending Friday breaks from 1.5 to 2 hours,” Onn Hafiz stated.

School-Based Support for Students

He also mentioned that schools might utilize suraus and halls to ensure male students perform their Friday prayers. Coordination between state education and religious departments will facilitate this.

Strengthening Family and Religious Values

Onn Hafiz expressed optimism about the transition, citing benefits for the economy and family life, while respecting religious practices.

Historical Weekend Revision

This decision follows an October decree by Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, ending the state’s Friday-Saturday weekend after 11 years.
