Era FM DJs Under Investigation for Allegedly Mocking Religious Rituals by Police

Police KUALA LUMPUR: Authorities are looking into a controversial video involving DJs from Era FM, which allegedly disrespected a religious ritual.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain stated that six complaints have been received concerning the incident.

Video Deleted After Gaining Traction Online Police

“Our investigation has found that the video was taken down. Before its removal, it had garnered 95,400 views and was shared by 204 users,” he said on Tuesday (March 4).

Charges and Penalties Explained

The case is being examined under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA).

A conviction under Section 298 could result in up to one year in jail, a fine, or both. Meanwhile, under Section 233 of the CMA, offenders may face a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment for up to one year, or both, with an additional RM1,000 fine for every extra day the offense continues after conviction.

Public Backlash and Official Apology

“One of the reports came from a 44-year-old engineer who viewed the video on Facebook and claimed that several members of the radio station were mocking Hindu traditions,” Razarudin added.

He further mentioned that the DJs involved have since apologized publicly via Era FM’s Facebook page.
